IELTS

Where language meets opportunity!

What is IELTS?
IELTS or International English Language Testing System is a globally recognized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who intend to study or work in countries where English is the primary language of communication. It is accepted by over 10,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, and immigration authorities.
Types

Academic Training: Is intended for individuals who want to study at an English-speaking university or higher education institution. It measures the individual’s ability to understand academic language and concepts and assesses their readiness for academic study in an English-speaking institution.

General Training: Is designed for individuals who plan to immigrate to an English-speaking country for work, training, secondary education, or other purposes. It focuses on general communication skills in a professional or social setting and assesses the individual’s ability to understand and use everyday English.

Both tests assess an individual’s proficiency in four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, the content and focus of the two tests differ slightly.

Formats

The IELTS test consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

  • Listening: The section of the test lasts for 30 minutes and consists of four sections. Each section consists of 10 questions and is designed to test your ability to understand spoken English.
  • Reading: The section of the test lasts for 60 minutes and consists of three sections. Each section consists of a reading passage followed by a series of questions.
  • Writing: The section of the test lasts for 60 minutes and consists of two tasks. In Task 1, you’ll be presented with a graph, chart, diagram, or table and asked to write a short report describing the information presented. In Task 2, you’ll be given a topic and asked to write an essay expressing your opinion on the topic.
  • Speaking: The section of the test lasts for 11-14 minutes and consists of three parts. In Part 1, you’ll be asked general questions about yourself and your life. In Part 2, you’ll be given a topic and asked to speak for 2 minutes on the topic. In Part 3, you’ll have a discussion with the examiner about the topic from Part 2.
Grading System

The IELTS test uses a 9-band scoring system to assess the English language proficiency of test-takers. The four sections of the test are evaluated individually and assigned a band score ranging from 0 to 9.

The overall band score is the average of the four section scores. The band descriptors provide detailed information on the abilities and skills required for each band. The IELTS band scores are recognized by institutions worldwide, and the required score may vary depending on the purpose of the test.
