What is PTE?

Pearson Language Tests refers to a range of standardized English language proficiency tests developed and administered by Pearson PLC, a multinational education and publishing company based in the United Kingdom. These tests are designed to assess a person’s ability to understand and communicate in English and are widely recognized by universities, colleges, and governments around the world as a reliable measure of English language proficiency.

Types

PTE Academic: A computer-based English language proficiency exam designed for non-native speakers who need to demonstrate their language skills for academic purposes.
PTE General: A set of six levels of English proficiency exams, which are designed to test and certify the language skills of non-native speakers for general purposes.
PTE Young Learners: A set of three levels of English language proficiency exams for young learners aged 6 to 13 years old.
PTE for Migration: An English language proficiency exam designed for non-native speakers who are planning to migrate to English-speaking countries.
PTE Workforce: An English language proficiency exam designed to assess the language skills of non-native speakers in a professional or workplace setting.

Formats

Speaking and Writing (77 – 93 minutes): This section consists of six parts, including Reading aloud, Repeating sentences, Describing images, Re-tell lectures, Answering short questions, and Writing essays.
Reading (32 – 41 minutes): This section consists of 15-20 questions that assess a candidate’s reading skills.
Listening (45 – 57 minutes): This section consists of eight parts, including Summarize spoken text, Multiple choice questions, Filling in the blanks, Highlighting correct summary, Selecting missing words, Highlight incorrect words, Write from dictation, Summarise the written text.

Grading System

PTE is scored on a scale of 10 to 90. Each section is graded separately, and the overall score is calculated by averaging the scores of the four sections. The test is graded by automated scoring algorithms and human raters. The PTE score report provides a detailed breakdown of the scores in each section, along with a description of the test taker’s performance.
